We will discuss the different types of aluminum, and the working properties of the most common alloys. The discussion will include temper in both heat-treatable, and non heat-treatable alloys. We will run through the range of thicknesses available for aluminum sheet metal, and the recommended thickness for various projects.
The first demonstration will be of the hammeforming process. We will do one hammeforming demo at room temperature, and one where the metal requires heating during the forming operation. Next, we’ll demonstrate some different riveting processes. For a more advanced demonstration, we’ll make the side of a motorcycle gas tank. This will be done using a mallet and sandbag for the rough shaping, and planishing it smooth with a hammer and dolly.
The last demonstration will be making a hood scoop, using the English wheel, plus shrinking and stretching machines.
